Kingfisher Airlines annual general body meeting to be held today will hopefully take a decision on the payment of wages to employees. For more than one year, the jobless workers are running from pillar to post to get the salary for the months they worked.
Workers of the Kingfisher Airlines have been trying to get a meeting with Vijay Mallya to at least get a part of the outstanding amount. Way back in April 2012, Mallya told employees that they would be paid.
Now, employees are hoping that something would come off Kingfisher Airlines (KfA) Annual General Meeting (AGM). United Breweries Holdings Limited (UBHL) AGM saw Mallya saying that efforts were on to revive the airline. The workers moved the Karnataka High Court which stated that under the pretext of taking efforts to revive the airline, one cannot keep the employees starving.
The court asked the company to give at least a month’s salary. United Breweries Holdings which owns Kingfisher faces lawsuits from those who lend money and asking for the company to be wound up and the asset be shared among the stakeholders. Mumbai office has been taken over by the banks and the employees are planning to go on a hunger strike.
The Karnataka High Court asked the counsel representing the employees to say that Kingfisher is a UBHL company and argue to get the Rs 250-crore to pay off the employees. UBHL has deposited Rs 250 crore in Bank of Maharashtra on an earlier court order and similarly Rs 379 crores with Laxmi Vilas Bank.
The sale amount that USL (United Spirits limited) got in the stake sale to UK-based spirit maker Diageo, is caught in legal process, which according to the UBHL is the reason for not being able to settle their creditors and employees.
Kingfisher Airlines has debts and losses totalling to the tune of over $2.5 billion. The carrier was grounded in October 2012 following the employee strike and finally it lost the Scheduled Operator’s Permit (SOP) on December 31, 2012. Companies that leased the aircrafts are now trying to retrieve the aircrafts seized by AAI for not paying airport fees.
